it is not a hardware issue.  a couple different employees at my local apple store told me "no way, it's software."  I guess the memo did not make it to everyone in apple.  Plus, way too many people had this happen RIGHT after the latest software update for that to be just a coincidence.

Lastly, funny how there have been no software updates for the iphone 4 recently, huh?  Because that may fix the problem and then it will be obvious apple has been lying to all their customers and have sold who knows how many new phones to people who did not need them.

    Hogwash.

Be sure to run antivirus with that grossly insecure mobile OS.

@Allan Sampson: I have to admit that iOS without  wi-fi is  extremely secure.

I have exactly the same problem, same age Iphone 4s too. Use 6.1.3 for a while and its wrecked my wifi. No amount of restores, resets blah blah fixes this. Apple Store solution well Sir you're out of warranty so we can sell you a refurbished Iphone for $200.

Dammit Apple, every hear of fessing up to you have a problem, and make things right... Sheesh this company is going downhill which is sad, because you have excellent products, but they have to work for more than 18 months. This problem is being talked about all over the net. But Apple isnt dealing with it!!!

At this rate my next phone wont be an Iphone!!!

EmBee82 --- Thank you for this very detailed and comprehensive "fix".

rhh1 --- Thank you for providing this alternative "fix".

Instead of taking the phone apart (as recommended by EmBee82), last night I heated it up (as recommended by rhh1) but instead of a heat gun, I used an incandescent bulb for about 10 minutes until it was too hot to handle, I let it cool down, reset the network settings and it is working.  It has been working for the last 12 hours.

I still don't understand how this could happen, but I am happy so far with the knowledge and willingness to assist in this forum.  My sincere thanks to all who make a positive contribution!

This is perhaps a strategic move from Apple to keep its Indian customers happy. That is where you get roasted at > 35 Degrees consistently , thereby keeping the Wi-fi working fine as well

I'm having the same issue. I've had an iPhone 4s for nearly two years. Last week, I had to have it replaced because the lock button became stuck. I had purposefully not updated my old phone to the newest OS as I had read bad things. The Apple store was great and replaced my old phone free of charge, even though it was out of warrant. Then, yesterday (I've had my phone for a week) I have the same issue. My Wifi and Bluetooth buttons are greyed out and it's driving me crazy! I think it's a software issue, though it heating and cooling the phone wouldn't have an effect on that, at least I wouldn't think. I tried resetting the settings, no luck. I guess I'll head towards a hot car this afternoon and try my luck there...

Thanks for your note.  I shared some thoughts on the possible cause several weeks back when I was trying to isolate & debug the issue.  My phone's wifi has now been working for one month since I heated it. I'm convinced its a borderline hardware issue triggered by the the software update.  Hope your "fix" is long lasting as well.

I agree with you as I also facing the same problem and why should i pay $200 for refurbish and not too sure that the same prblem exists in the new phone .I spent $700 for 4s and now i have to pay another $200,nowi wont even think of going with Apple and spending too much money  on the product which lasts for short period. Wifi greyed out after updating IOS 6.1.3.There arem1000s of people facing the same issue then why the APPLE company not doing anything except making money by selling refurbish phone for $200 in exchange.

    Never expected from Apple......Disappointed
