"the ipod software update server could not be contacted"

OK so seems lots of people have had issues here, and I've tried the most of what is suggested -

diable windows firewall, diable symantec firewall, disable the router firewall, use google's

DNS server All of the above

And nothing works, how do I retun this peice of H/W that is impossible to maintain!!
