How can I play mpg files on my mac or ipad?

Can I extend Quick Time to play files with the extension mpg? I don't want to have to convert all my files and I'd rather not have to use a different player.

I'm sure I've played these files on an older mac. Will Quick Time recognise them if I just rename the extensions?

Quicktime Player will easily play MPEG-1 and MPEG-4 files (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3775). However, MPEG-2 files (typically from DVDs) are not supported natively (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3526).

The easy solution is to use a trusted 3rd party application that can play them. One of the best is VLC player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html).

One way to extent QuickTime player is to purchase QuickTime Pro for QuickTime 7 (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/extending/). The best other way used to be to install Perian (http://perian.org/) but is is no longer supported. They however recommend "niceplayer" (https://code.google.com/p/niceplayer/) froom the Perian web site.
