old imac/new imac; migration assistant???

old imac wont identify new imac; migration assistant "on" - for both (10.5.8 -- 10.8.2); any other way to transfer files? can the old imac be used as an xtra harddrive? would reconnecting old mac & pushing info through icloud/internet be a solution?

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You only run Migration Assistant from the new iMac. The old iMac should be booted into Target Disk Mode and connected to the new iMac using a Firewire cable compatible with the Firewire ports on each computer.

Or you can buy the Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor. This would provide faster and more reliable file transfers than Ethernet, but if it isn't an option for you, then use Ethernet. This only requires that both computers be connected to your local network. Then you need to turn on File Sharing in the Sharing preferences on the old iMac. I forsee only one possible problem - it may not work unless the old iMac is running Snow Leopard. But I am not sure of this.
