Q: Resolution Wrong on VGA monitor when waking from sleep, since updating to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3

I have a 2009 model MacBook Pro 13" that I have hooked up to an external 21" HANNspree monitor via Apple's mini-display to VGA adaptor. I have never had a problem with this with Lion or Mountain Lion. But this week, I did the update to OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and now every time I wake the Mac from sleep while connected to the moitor, the monitor's display is completley wrong - resolution is incorrect, icons and menu bar are gigantic and don't fit the screen, dock is a little too big too and fuzzy, and when I go into display settings, I see that the settings are generic an OS X is not recognizing the specific monitor at all. To resolve this, I have to either open up the laptop, let its screen come on, and then close it, or else unplug the monitor from the Mac and plug it back in - after doing one of these two things, then the resolution is normal and the Mac recognizes my particular monitor and has the correct settings. While this is not a crippling problem because there is a workaround, it's still excessivley aggravating and unnaceptable for a major update to an OS for an expensive brand of computer. I have heard that others are having this problem too. Does anyone know if there is any way to fix this?

I've been having the same problem with an Acer monitor. It's very frustrating. The way I fix it each time is by going to System Preferences and Display then pressing the alt key which brings up a hidden button Detect Display which when I click it detects my display correctly. I have no idea why this button is hidden.

I'm wondering if the problem is fixed in Mavericks but I can't upgrade as the software I am using is not compatible.

Wow!  Thanks for this reponse.  I believe the button is hidden due to Apple's trend to remove its users from the knowledge and ability to access the details of the underlying hardware.  "Value added" I'd assume is what Apple would call it.  I'm not so sure.  Get in a discussion with the author of Hardware Monitor sometime to get some insite into how with each new release of OS X, it gets harder and harder to get at the details of the actual hardwae under OSX's hood - that would be my guess as to why it is hidden.  Thanks for this response.  The button is hidden in Mavericks and as you suggest indicate for ML, the "Gather Windows" button changes to "Detect Displays" when the alt/option key is depressed.

I was constantly plagued by this problem.

One workaround I found is to unplug/replug the adapter, which corrects the resolution upon reconnect.

A better way is to use a DVI adapter (instead of a VGA adapter). I never had the resolution problem again after switching to a DVI adapter.

    DisplayMenu helped me too. Thanks!

    I found a solution here http://chris.dziemborowicz.com/blog/2012/07/04/fix-external-monitor-resolution-o n-macbook-pro-with-retina-display/

    Here's a quote:

To fix the external monitor resolution by showing more sensible resolution options for this monitor (including the correct 2560x1600-pixel resolution), hold the Option key while clicking on the Scaled radio button.

I don't know if this is the 'native' solution, but it did help me in getting my screen to the higher resolution (1920 x 1280).

Hi all. In case anyone comes back here, I found something that works for me. When I replug my monitor in after disconnecting it, it doesn't work. I've tried many of the things suggested here. Then, I stepped away from the computer for a while. When I returned, my screen saver was showing...on both monitors! I repeated this solution by setting the screen saver to 1 minute and it worked again. Hopefully, it will work for you. Have a great day!
