Intermittent display corruption

I have an old Macbook pro:


2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo

4GB Ram

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT


I've started getting intermittent display corruption issues, which you can see in this image:

These sometimes last for a few minutes and then go away. It is rarely present when I first switch on/resume the machine.


Any ideas about what this is? I'm guessing that it might be the dreaded death of the graphics chip?


I see that the extended recall of these parts is long over.


Any advice on what I can do?

You might run the Apple hardware test to see if it picks up any issues. Run the extended test, which can take over an hour to run.
