Intermittent display corruption

I have an old Macbook pro:

2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo

4GB Ram

NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

I've started getting intermittent display corruption issues, which you can see in this image:

These sometimes last for a few minutes and then go away. It is rarely present when I first switch on/resume the machine.

Any ideas about what this is? I'm guessing that it might be the dreaded death of the graphics chip?

I see that the extended recall of these parts is long over.

Any advice on what I can do?

You might run the Apple hardware test to see if it picks up any issues. Run the extended test, which can take over an hour to run.

Thanks, I ran the quick test and got an error which I think is a video card error but it's ironically hard to read the screen. Another photo, maybe you might be able to recognise it better than me:

The error is

4VDC/1/40000003: VideoController

While the repair program covered 4 years from purchase, the overall repair program ended coverage on Dec 7, 2012 .... you might take your system to an Apple store to see if they will cover the repair, and you would also find out what a replacement logic board would run. Probably won't cover it, however, doesn't hurt to ask.
