Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try a restart.

Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Run until it reports no errors. If there is a recurring error, see the article on what permission errors can be ignored.

Disk Utility Repair Permissions You Can Safely Ignore

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Step by Step to Fix Your Mac

Upgrade Nightmares

Mar 24, 2013 11:45 AM in response to cnokia42

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:

Sophos

VirtualBox

Kerio Control

If the panic is recurrent, I suggest you uninstall them, one at a time, according to the developers' instructions, to see whether you can identify which one is at fault. Start with Sophos, as it's the only that's completely useless. A conflict between modifications may be involved. Reboot and test after each uninstallation.

Back up all data before making any changes.

Thanks for your reply.

I have uninstalled sophos and drop box, I also logged in as a new user. I still have the same problem.

The latest version of java is installed when going via the browser.

However, via the terminal I get the following:

java -version

java version "1.6.0_37"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode)

What else can I try?

Mar 26, 2013 4:51 PM in response to cnokia42

Java has nothing to do with your problem. Neither does Dropbox.

If you've uninstalled all three items mentioned in my last message, and they no longer show up in the panic reports, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days.

Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
