Why does it prioritize EDGE on my iPhone 5 even though there is 3G signal?

my iphone 5 prioritizes EDGE rather than 3G. How do I make my phone prioritize 3G instead of the EDGE?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.3

Likely because the 3G reception is not strong.

Unless there is a hardware or software problem, the iPhone will connect the fastest internet connection available. If wi-fi is enabled and the iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network, the iPhone will use wi-fi for data access. If a wi-fi network is not available, the iPhone will connect to the fastest cellular network at the time - LTE, 3G, or EDGE.

actually.... when I was still in iOS 6.1.2, I did not have a problem with the connection. 3G signal was only 1 bar lower than EDGE. iOS 6.1.2 stayed with 3G, but when I upgraded to iOS 6.1.3, it doest go 3G anymore. I did a reset, I did what people say with Airplane mode on and off, it goes back to 3G, even if it gets full signal bars, after 15 seconds, it goes back to EDGE.

Is there a way we can set to 3G preferred?

No, because it is already preferred if wi-fi or LTE is not available. There is no manual adjustment for this.

is there a way that we can set our iphone to prefer 3G than EDGE because EDGE may have a better signal, but way too slow connection. this is really a fallback for iphone. im quite disappointed with this. I've been an iphone and ipad user for 3 years already. if user still cannot set priority on its preferred network type, then I might use android instead. I have a data plan along with my iphone, I will be paying for nothing if I keep on using EDGE. In this case, both data plan and iphone become useless. I hope Iphone can do something about this. my friends are using iphone because I referred it to them. If nothing happens, I would just refer androids next time

Already answered.

The data cost has nothing to do with the speed of the connection. If you have an iPhone 5 and your carrier doesn't have an LTE network available, does that mean you are paying for nothing when you have 3G access? Too funny.

Your idle threats are being provided to fellow users only.

If an Android device provides this option and your carrier stinks without having adequate 3G coverage in all locations where you spend most of your time, get one. Be sure to purchase antivirus for it.

actually sir, if you read what the users are asking, you will be able to understand what they need. We are not talking about data cost, we are talking about data plan. EDGE speed is quite slower than 3G. Now, just because EDGE has has more signal than 3G, it doesnt mean that it has faster speed than 3G. the problem with iphone is that it automatically switches to EDGE if EDGE has more signal EVEN IF there is 3G connection.

and... YOU STILL HAVEN'T ANSWERED THE QUESTION.... PLEASE READ CAREFULLY....

the question now is that is there a way we can change the priority of the network to prioritize 3G instead of having to automatically switch which one has more signal. We know signal is important, but speed is more important as long as there is a signal. It means to say, as long as there is 3G signal, even if it is only 1 bar or 2 bars and EDGE has full bars, we still prefer the 3G connection, we dont need iphone to switch automatically to EDGE. The question is, is there a way to do that.

and i'm sorry if it sounded like a threat. All I am saying is that iphone is better than android, but even if it is better, but it cannot provide what we need, what use is it it right? and this is why we are asking you if this is possible. If you google or look at the community, there are so many people asking for the same thing I asked.

There's another factor that hasn't been discussed yet. If there are no 3G channels currently available on the towers in range the phone will use EDGE rather than no connection. The cellular network has very little excess capacity, so a sudden surge in demand (or a partial network outage) can result in no available connections.

ok... thanks for the answer.

JimHDK, my question actually is this... in the upcoming updates, is there a way they can do that? the fourth post says about the current update.

Thank you Lawrence. Actually, when I was still on iOS6.1.2, I didnt have any problems, it rarely goes to EDGE. most of the time it was on 3G, however, when I upgraded to iOS 6.1.3, that was when I started to have the problem. It keeps on going back to EDGE. I switch it back to 3G, after 15 seconds of 3G, it goes back to EDGE.

Why does it prioritize EDGE on my iPhone 5 even though there is 3G signal?
