STOP CORRECTING ME!!!

This is annoying, it happens in both Mail and Safari, I type in text and my Mac keeps INSISTING on replacing the text with what it thinks isbetter, it insists on changing my ORD to ODD, no matter how many times I change it to ORD, still ODD....

Hey, Apple, PUHLEEEZE, I wanna fly toORD, Chicago, IL, USA, not to ODD which is in some weird place calledOodnadatta, somewhere in the Tundra of central Australia.......

Is there a way to tell my Mac to be a bit more humble and polite, less insisting it's always right? Correcting my typos, great, please, keep up the good job, but hey, I wanna fly to Chicago, not to some Oodnadattaplace, where I'd be probably eaten by the local cannibals, all because of YOU !!!!!!!........

Disabling Auto-Corrections in Mac OS X El Capitan, Yosemite, & OS X Mavericks

  1. Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu as usual, then go to “Keyboard”
  2. Choose the “Text” tab.
  3. Uncheck the box next to “Correct spelling automatically”

Hi parker612,

I appreciate your answers and time, but I am one of the most frustrated people on earth right about now.

I have done Exactly what you said and the "correct spelling automatically" is unchecked.

The problem is I am in a country other than the US, so English is not my first or only language.

When I type for example in Afrikaans my home language it still changes alot of my text even though the "correct spelling automatically" is not turned on.

Ex. If I type "om stil te kan raak" witch translates to "to fall silent" it changes the above "stil te" to -> "stilt e" whitch isn't a word in afrikaans.

This is only one of hundreds of examples,

This means if I communicate with someone on from a mac it looks like I am a idiot and cant spell.

Please if you have any sort of solutions please come back to me!

Thank you

Thanx wil definitly post on a newer discussion, thanx for the tip. I tried to learn it the words but there is to many at least one per sentence and this took to long and I thought since I pay top dollar for a premium product that is suppost to help me why should I struggle so much.

But I called one of my friends who is a "mac professional" and got a solotion.

On "word" I had to click on the thing it changed and then click on "autocorrect options", then I had to uncheck "replace text as you type" box

On pages I had to click on the edit button, go to spelling and grammar, then uncheck "correct spelling automatically" This was the same for safari messenger and most of the apple softawe.

Even though I unchecked it at the system prefrences "text", I had to to the above mentiond for every app I wanted to type in.

You, parker612, are my hero. I have tried every solution I could find online for months. My computer would seemingly learn a new spelling, but then revert back in a day or two and start automatically correcting the word again. Weird.

I didn't want to turn off Check Spelling Automatically completely because it's very helpful 95% of the time. But I have common words that my clients use for business that have an unusual spelling. I was having to "correct the corrections" on a daily -- or hourly -- basis. Sometimes I didn't catch them until it was too late. Embarrassing.

This seems like such a simple and logical solution. Why, oh why, isn't it in the Help menu????

The turning point was when you explained how to get to the window that had the Learn button! I can't thank you enough.

One small wrinkle. I've discovered that every time I shut down my MBP, I have to teach my computer to "Learn" those spellings again or it starts autocorrecting those same, troublesome words.

I don't restart that often, so I can live with this minor inconvenience. But if anyone knows of a permanent solution, I hope you'll pass it along.
