Ok, I know what everyone is thinking, but this request for information really is on behalf of a friend whose cat managed to lay on the key board. As a result, everything is gigantic. From the top menu bar to the dock and pointer, it's massive, making everything distorted. Any and all ideas on how to restore back to normal viewing size are greatly appreciated? Please advise.

Apple Menu / System Preferences / Accessibility.
Experiment with Display and Zoom.

It is really difficult to see your way around. Are there any keyboard shortcuts? I've tried the commad +- and it doesn't do anything.
In Accessibility / Zoom, look also at More Options.
Then try a PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
And finally, do a SMC reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Check in System Preferences>Universal Access and see if Zoom is on. If you have toddlers or cats this can accidentally turned on by hitting a group of keys that include Option + Command + 8.
Option + Command + 8 will also turn it off.
To prevent this being accidentally activated in the future go to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Universal Access and uncheck all the boxes.
Thanks for the suggestions, unfortunately none of them worked. However, I am happy to announce a solution received from a kid, who said to simply hold the control key while moving the cursor up and down repeatedly until the screen shrunk to size. It worked like a charm.
Have you tried holding down control and using a two finger scroll gesture? That zooms in and out for me. (Towards screen for zooming in, other direction to zoom out.)

This could make a great physics lab demo. In ancient times we would rub a plastic rod with a cat skin to generate static electricity then touch a neighboring person for a shock. The modern version would be to take a live cat and gently rub it over the trackpad.
Desktop went from normal viewing size to gigantic due to cat laying across keyboard.
