Q: Final Cut/computer doesn't recognize camcorder. How to solve?

The computer and Final Cut Pro 7 no longer recognize my old camcorder Sony TRV 460. It used to. I tried a new USB cable and it still doesn't work. I'm using Mac OS 10.6.8 which I've used in the past with the camera and have had no problem with it. Any ideas about how to get it to recognize the camcorder? It uses old 8mm tapes.

Not sure about your specific Camcorder but usually the Tape Camcorders are connected with FireWire, not USB.

Thanks. I've used the regular USB cable in the past, but I'm thinking about getting a firewire 800 in case something is worn out or bent as far as the USB connection on the camera.

A USB cable will ONLY transfer stills images, if stored in the camera, not video.

With respect, you can't have used a USB cable to transfer video in the past, as that won't, and never will, work for Sony TRV-type cameras.

Get yourself a Firewire cable, and all will be good.
