Mar 24, 2013 5:04 PM in response to jackandjeffby Kenichi Watanabe,I think it might be the iTunes 11 update, and not any update on the shuflfe, that is causing your problems.
You probably need to show the sidebar, which the new version of iTunes can hide (to make the app more streamlined). From the iTunes menu bar, under the View menu, select Show Sidebar. With the sidebar visible, iTunes mostly works like it did before the latest major update.
If that's not it, please post back.

Mar 5, 2016 3:41 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby jackandjeff,Team,
I am curious as to how to retrieve my music from an older Ipod shuffle. When I first loaded the shuffle, I was using an HP PC with Windows XP. All was well, I could burn music from CD's, grab from Youtube, etc. and it would be stored in MyDocuments/Mymusic folder. I could then pick and choose from the file library as the shuffle gave me the option from where to pull music from to put on the shuffle. I must note at this time that none of this music was purchased from ITunes. Since that time, I have moved on to another PC running Windows 8. I can see the song list on the shuffle but I cannot find a way to move that music out of the shuffle into any kind of storage folder, where I can then throw it into a Nano that was given to me as a gift. The goal is to be able to salvage these songs from the original shuffle for future uses. Is there a way I can move songs from the original shuffle to another IPod device.
I would be forever be beholden to you if you could solve this quandary for me.

You cannot use iTunes to transfer songs from iPod to computer. iTunes syncing is typically in one direction only, from iTunes library to iPod. That is by design; you should back up your data on the computer, and when you change computers, transfer your user data (including your iTunes data) from the old computer to the new computer.
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod music transfer," you should get some useful links. See if you can use the method (that does not require additional software) described in this article

Mar 5, 2016 3:51 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby jackandjeff,Geez, it's been awhile! Anyway, I looked at your instructions and I don't even see a "View" option on the page showing my Ipod music. Am I missing something? (apparently so)

Mar 6, 2016 8:41 AM in response to jackandjeffby Kenichi Watanabe,★HelpfuliTunes has become version 12 since I wrote that (if the "View" you are asking about is from my older post)...
If you want to see what is currently on the iPod, select the iPod in iTunes. You do this by clicking on the iPod's device button on the horizontal bar that goes across the iTunes window. That small button has an icon that looks like the iPod, and it is located closer to the left end of horizontal bar.
The iPod's settings screen is shown. If your shuffle is 1st gen or 2nd gen, along left side of window (in the sidebar), under Settings, click On This iPod. If your shuffle is 3rd or 4th gen, in the sidebar, under On My Device, click Music. On either case, the songs currently on the shuffle is show to the right. However, as noted in my other post, you cannot transfer song files from iPod to computer using iTunes.

Mar 6, 2016 8:43 AM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby jackandjeff,I guess it's going to take a commercial app to cross the Apple minefield. Any suggestions?

Mar 6, 2016 1:10 PM in response to jackandjeffby Kenichi Watanabe,There is no actual "minefield." Apple is not preventing anything; you just can't do it using iTunes.
I don't have a recommendation for such a third-party app, because all of my songs are in my iTunes library on the computer (and I back that up along with the rest of my user data in case my computer has a problem). I can re-sync any iPod I own. I transfer my complete iTunes library from old computer to new computer.
Try the method described here. It apparently does not require any additional software.
