Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

  • Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
  • When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
  • If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Sound won't work, but there should be no graphics artifacts.

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I am having the same problems. After upgrading to 10.8.3 my screen looks like there is radio interferance and then the screen gets scrambled like a jigsaw puzzle, freezes and then crashes.

I added a new admin user and tested on that and problem was still occuring so not user specific.

I have follwed the instructions to boot in safe mode and first time it got stuck on the grey sketchy background with a little bit of scrambling then crashed. Second time loaded in safe mode ok, apart from slow didnt seem to have scramble issue and didnt crash. Shut down.

Restarted in normal mode, didnt even get to login screen and it crashed. Second time could login but scrambling happening straight away while logging in. After a little while same deal, scrambled then crashed. How do I fix it?

Same here,

My iMac mid2011 is rendered useless now.... Can't do anything with it anymore. Screen looks like a jigsaw puzzle and the sound sounds awful!

Chrome, Finder, Safari etc. al crash and act weird when they do work...

With al the posts here and on other forums, it looks like Apple really screwed up with this update!

Is there no way to downgrade???

Restart the computer holding down the command - option/alt - P - R keys before the grey screen appears. Continue to hold until you hear the startup chime for the second time.

Reset NVRAM/PRAM

Try an SMC reset. The article covers when this is required, but doing this will not affect anything.

Reset SMC

Troubleshooting article, but you may be to the point where you need to boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R), run Disk Utility from there and reinstall the OS.
