Q: print option missing --draft

After a recent purchase of a mac mini with Mountain Lion, I find that my print quality options no longer contain "draft."  This was an option I frequently used in order to save ink.

I have a Canon MX 712 with all available updates installed.  Is there a way I can once again print drafts?

I have a mac mini OSX10.8.2

"About this Mac" says:

2.5 GHz Intel i5

4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I just discovered that doing the above BREAKS THE SCANNER FUNCTION on my Canon printer.

    The fix -

Add back the Canon/AirPrint driver in Print/Scan Preferences.

Click the plus button to add it again. Now when you see a little window appear showing the (printer name), do select this.

But you'll also have to rename it - otherwise you won't be able to differentiate the regular driver from the AirPrint driver.  Right Click (two finger tap on Trackpad) the printer name in Scan/Print Preferences and rename.  I renamed mine to Canon... AirPrint.

Before and after screenshots - note the scanner reappears in the Print/Scan Preferences - and also in the Utility window.

I have the same problem outlined here.

On my previous iMac and printer, I could print in draft/fast mode. Now with Mac mini OS X 10.8.5 (12F45) and new printer, Canon MG5450, in print options fast is greyed out, offering only normal or best as options on the slider scale. Having tracked previous discussion of the problem on this site, I have attempted to make the suggested changes in Applications>Utilities. However my printer does not show up on the screen! How can I access the printer spec in order to make changes?

Thanks so much for this fix…..but I am still having problems having followed through your advice.  I'm trying to get a draft print option on a newly purchased Canon Pixar MG5600 printer but when I select (in print and scan box) "Canon MG5600 series" and set use to MG5600 series ie not AirPrint I get the following error message:

"Unable to find an appropriate software on your system after running software update"

I have a mac pro and am using mountain lion OSX 10.8.5

    Any help much valued…..

Try installing the MG5600 Series driver from Canon.

    Thanks for the reply PAHU

Yes I've done this (tried both recent versions 1.1 and 11.7.1. 0.from Canon UK website) and even deleted and then re-installed.  Seems they do not support a non-airprint capability and therefore disallows draft printing option which is frustrating.  Any advice?  Thanks..

Not sure who you mean by they, but neither Apple or Canon are doing this. If you can only select the AirPrint driver and not the MG5600 series driver then there is something wrong with your Mac. So if the same message appearing when you try to select the MG5600 driver?

    Thanks PAHU.

I've now got it cracked and have the draft print option available.  I re-installed the print driver again and all OK.  Thanks again for your help…much appreciated.  Best regards

This helped me get "fast" option back for printing (which I'm still not sure is the same as "draft"), but it removed my capability to print double-sided! Any fixes out there?

Thank you, thank you, thank you PAHU!  I have been annoyed with this problem for over a year, and have wasted much ink and time trying to resolve it.

Your instructions were clear, simple, and successful!!  Thank you so much

This worked perfectly even now, in 2015. Thank you for your knowledge sharing!

Thank you for recommending using Canon IJ Network driver.  This worked for me on OSX El Capitan 10.11.2 and enabled the Fast (draft) option on my MX726 and the two-sided printing. Very happy!
