They Re-cycle them and sell them back to the suppliers.
Was the work done under warranty or did you pay for it?
If done under warranty then it was not your drive, it was Apple's drive. They replaced a defective part with one that was good at no cost to you. you ended up with exactly what you originally bought. Any and all parts replaced under warranty are the property of the manufacturer. Otherwise it would be like they supplied 2 hard drives with the system and they didn't.
No manufacture returns parts that have been replaced under warranty.
If you paid for the repair then you have the right to ask for the bad part to be returned to you. Once the warranty is over then all the part in any product become yours to do with as you please.
Most people do not want worn out parts returned so it is just common place for repair centers, of any kind, to just dispose of the faulty part. Sometimes at an expence to the consumer, like recycling car tires.
computer was 4 years old, no longer under warrant. Wife paid for new hard drive and install on her laptop. In other instances when i'd buy a part to be replaced the store would automatically give me the worn out or replaced parts, i assumed in part to assure me that they had done the work 'under the hood' as it were. I'm also concerned because all my wifes work files and info are on the old drive (she didn't consult me first, it is pretty easy to retrieve the data even from a 'dead' hard drive). i'm new to apple products, but if this is standard opperating procedure no wonder identity theft is so rampant.
Any chance they run them under a magnet first? Who am I kidding? Why on earth would an apple store be concerned about a partons information being secure?
