iPhone OS update killed my phone

I synced my phone, then installed the latest iOS. It stopped near then end and gave an error message that it can't complete the update. Now my phone has a message to connect to iTunes. I reconected and iTunes says that the phone is in recovery mode. Do you want to recover?

Yes, and again it gets to the end and comes up with another error message, "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be resotred. An unknow error occurred (3014).

I tried to restore from back-up, but it is greyed out and I cannot even resotre the phone!

Please help!

To simplify, one of the following is causing the problem:

1. Your antivirus is blocking access to gs.apple.com.

2. Your phone is jailbroken.

3. Your computer has been used at some time in the past to jaibreak some iOS device (not necessarily the phone with the problem), and its network database was corrupted by the hacking software that was used.

4. Apple's activation servers are down (very rare, and never for more than an hour or so).

For 1. try disabling your antivirus.

For 2. & 3. you need to go somewhere other than an apple forum for help. Although you can try deleting lines containing gs.apple.com from your "hosts" file on your computer.
