Q: iPhoto worries

I am running iPhoto 8.1.2. on an iMac with Lion. When I go into software update, it doesn't offer me an update route. With version 11 deleting libraries I am unsure whether or not to buy it off Mac Apps. Advice welcome.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

There are no further updates to iPhoto v8. iPhoto 11 isn't deleting Libraries. What advice were you looking for?

    Advice welcome.

iPhoto '11 is quite different from the iPhoto version you are running now. It is a major new release.

Have a look at the iPhoto ressources - Tutorials, videos, if you may profit from the new features and if you like them and are willing to pay for them. The main new features are an improved library structure and iCloud integration.

    Regards

Thanks Terence and Leonie for your replies. If you look at the comments under iPhoto11 in the Apps pages, there are considerable criticisms of iPhoto11's perforance and talk of libraries being lost. There is also information online about upgrading via 9.0.1 before loading iP11 to avoid the problem and the comment that by issuing the 9.0.1 patch, Apple have fixed a problem they now admit they had.

Are you both saying to me that if I buy iP11 off the Apps site (and it does seem very cheap for a major program) I should have no problems migrating my photo library from the old to the new?

    Thanks again

That is exactly what they are saying - and exactly what virtually everyone's experiance has been - remember litterally millions and millions of people use iPhoto - some have problems (most due to user error and failure to keep a good backup)

If you want the capabilities of iPhoto '11 then backup and upgrade - if you don't then do nothing - only you can deciede waht you want to do

For me iPhoto '11 has worked very well so far, both with MacOS X 10.7.5 and 10.8.3.

Also upgrading older iPhoto Libraries from previous versions has been no problem.

Just take precautions: The upgrade will have to restructure your iPhoto Library. And that will be much safer, if you make sure that your library has no issues. I'd use the built-in first aid tools to repair the permissions and the database before you upgrade to iPhoto '11. And be sure your backup of the iPhoto library is current.

    Good Luck.

The best thing about the Internet is that anyone with a keyboard can express an opinion. That's also the worst thing. When you look at comments anywhere on  the Net you have to ask yourself about the commenter. Who is it? Do they know what they are talking about? There are people (even experienced posters on this site) who will swear that iPhoto cannot do things that it has been able to do for years. There are people who'll tell you that iPhoto damaged this or trashed that but when other folks can't replicate what they describe, what are you to think?

Before updating anything always, always, always have a back up. Always.

If you purchase iPhoto 11 on the App store you'll get the current version - v.9.4.2 - iPhoto 9.1 was more than two years ago...

Sorry, I hope this may be the last question before I buy!! I signed in ready to download and got the message: "iPhoto 8.1.2 is already installed and was not purchased from the Mac App Store. Do you want to buy iPhoto 9.4.2?"

Is there a hidden meaning behind telling me that the original program was not bought off Mac App Store. It's as if it is trying to say "Do you REALLY want to buy it?!!"

No there's no hidden meaning. It's giving you a chance to change your mind before spending money.
