Keyboard and mouse not working! URGENT!

Hi,

My mouse and keyboard have stopped working, the kb/mouse work fine on other cpu's. Can I safeboot without a keyboard. Will this help to diagnose the problem. The OS starts up fine but the mouse cursor is stuck up in the corner. Is it possible that the kb/mouse preferences have somehow been turned off? I have applications that run on startup, (Adobe CS 2 and a couple of others), possible conflict?

Cheers,

Nik.

Hi X,

Thx for the response, unfortunately I am unable to activate any functions/utilities or windows due to the mouse and keyboard not responding. I am unable to do an Archive and re-install which is the route I would like to take. I am unable to open the optical disc tray to insert any discs!! 😟 The clock is working, so the machine is 'alive' but the HD icon is not visiable on the desktop, which is a concern.

Cheers,

Nik.

You note the keyboard and mouse work on other computers; when you reattached them to your Mac, did you try a different USB port on the Mac? Does the mouse LED light up? Are these an Apple keyboard/mouse pair or third party hardware? You can check if the keyboard is working separately from the mouse by trying the fast shutdown keyboard shortcut, ctrl-cmd-opt-eject

p.s. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

Hello Nik

-Disconnect all other USB devices from your computer except the mouse and keyboard.
-Unplug the keyboard or mouse from the USB port, wait a few seconds, then reconnect it.
-Plug the keyboard or mouse into another USB port.
-Make sure the USB connectors are plugged in completely.
-Make sure the cables on the keyboard or mouse are not damaged or frayed.
-If you suspect a mouse problem, try using the mouse on another surface. Non-reflective, opaque surfaces without repetitive patterns work best.
-If that doesn't work, plug the mouse into a free USB port on your computer. If the mouse works, you may have a problem with the keyboard.
-If the mouse still doesn't work, borrow a USB mouse from another computer and connect it to your computer. If that solves the problem, your mouse may need repair. Contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
-If you suspect a keyboard problem, borrow a USB keyboard from another computer and connect it to your computer. If that solves the problem, you may need to have your keyboard repaired. Consult an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Good Luck!

Hi Nik,

Let's reset the System Management Unit. Since you are having access problems, this is from Apple's knowledge base. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300341

How to reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)
Learn how to reset the SMU on Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) and Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) computers, and when to do so.

The SMU (System Management Unit) is a microcontroller chip on the logic board that controls all power functions for your computer. If your computer is experiencing any issues regarding these functions, resetting the SMU may resolve the issue. The functions controlled by the SMU include:

It tells the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so on.
It handles system resets from various commands.
It controls the fan.
Note that resetting the SMU does not reset the PRAM.

Resetting the SMU can resolve some computer issues such as not starting up, not displaying video, sleep issues, fan noise issues, and so on. If your computer still exhibits these types of issues even after you've restarted the computer, try resetting the SMU.

Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)

To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) computer, simply do the following:

Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
Remove the power cord from the computer.
Wait 15 seconds.
Plug in the power cord.
Turn on the computer.
Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)

To reset the SMU on a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) computer, either use the steps listed above for the Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) or:

Turn off the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu or by holding the power button until the computer turns off.
Open and remove both the metallic outer door and the inner plastic air deflector.

Remove the fan assembly immediately to the left of the processor module.
Press the SMU reset button on the logic board.
Replace the fan assembly, air deflector, and outer door.
Turn on the computer.

Unlike earlier models of Power Mac G5 or Power Mac G4 computers, the Power Mac G5 (Late 2004) and (Late 2005) models do not have a PMU. This functionality has been replaced by the SMU.

Good luck!

John
