Time Machine Service Page in Server App says "Error Reading Settings"

I have a Mac Mini running 10.8.3.

For some reason the Time Machine Page in the Server App refuses to work properly. If I reboot the server it looks fine for about 10 minutes. It displays the backup location and the list of individual backups. Then I get this message:

25/03/2013 14:37:51.673 Server[286]: Error: The server '127.0.0.1' reported an error while processing command of type: 'readSettings' in plug-in: 'servermgr_timemachine'. Error: Error Domain=XSActionErrorDomain Code=1000 "An unknown error occurred" UserInfo=0x7fdc1b2445e0 {NSLocalizedDescription=An unknown error occurred}

Also the Time Machine page in Server Apps is blank apart from "Error Reading Settings" and the slider at the top says Time Machine is off.

However Time Machine does work for some clients.

Anyone got any idea?

I think it started having problems when I got a "The network confirguration has changed" alert.

I may have finally fixed it for myself by doing the following...

Open Terminal and go to the path you have set for your Time Machine Server backup Destination. In that folder there are two files:

.com.apple.TimeMachine.quota.plist

.com.apple.timemachine.supported

Given the error message stating 'Error Reading Settings', I thought it may be a permission issue. So, I just opened up those 2 files to full read-write from everyone. I haven't dialed it back to make the files more secure than that yet, but doing this isn't exactly good security practice:

sudo chmod a+rwx .com.apple.*

I haven't gotten the error message since doing this (although I'm surely jinxing myself).

I am seeing something similar, although my setup is a little more complicated (the Time Machine disks are on a ZFS RAIDZ set, running Open ZFS on OS X (O3X).

I have been looking around using dtruss and the like and as far as I can see, the

servermgrd[1379]: [1379] error in getAndLockContext: flock(servermgr_timemachine) FATAL time out

are just the Server admin locking a semaphore to prevent another instance of itself from changing things. Do you have multiple instances of Server running? For instance, one on the Mac Mini and another monitoring from another Mac?

Also, have you done a backup, and are some of the backups (the sparse bundles) very large, of the order of hundreds of GB?

My running dtruss shows that servermanagerd is touching every 8M file in the band directory, and there are thousands!

$ ls -alh /TM/user/machinename.sparsebundle/bands|wc

63098 567875 3466044

(Output from dtruss)

and so on, for tens of thousands of lines.

If you use the CLI, I suspect you'll find all is working.

% sudo serveradmin fullstatus timemachine

timemachine:command = "getState"

timemachine:state = "RUNNING"

The following command should list all the settings:

% sudo serveradmin settings timemachine

Time Machine Service Page in Server App says "Error Reading Settings"
