Now this is weird. I synced my ipod with my computer and it threw away 500mb of data! Other didnt get bigger, Audio got smaller, apps didnt get bigger and everything else was the same. what just happened? This is not right, i have a feeling my ipod has a virus that is eating space.

Maybe iTunes was configured to convert higher bitrate songs to a higher compression. That is an option in the Summary pane for the iPod in iTunes.
I have not heard of a virus on an un-jailbroken iPod.
any ideas on how to lower song bit-rate?
If you go to the Summary pane for the iPod in iTunes there is a check box to compress higher bitrate songs and you can select different compressions. 128 kbps is a good compromise for quality and storage space.
