I purchased a new Verizon iPhone 5 over the internet. The new phone shows the carrier as "Verizon 14.1" however Verizon does not have the MEID in their database and when I insert a Verizon sim card, I get an error that only Compatible Sim cards will work. Verizon is investigating to see what is causing this. Does anyone have any idea what may have happened?

Where exactly did you purchase it? If you got it from Verizon or from apple.com, then return it for another one.
If you got it someplace else, there's no telling what's wrong with it... Again, though, the answer would be to return it and get one from a legitimate source.
I purchased the phone from a Cellular store in New York. I did an IMEI check online and it shows that the phone is locked to Sprint. How can this be since the phone shows the carrier as Verizon?
From the sound of it, whoever sold it to you was incorrect. Return it and get your money back.
