gmail no longer works after iOS 6.1.3 update

I just updated my iPad 3 to iOS 6.1.3 and immediately noticed that when I tried to open the mail client, it would launch and shut off. Turns out that I had to delete all of my gmail accounts and then the mail client worked. I tried to add the gmail accounts back but now I get the following error:

The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the "Incoming Mail Server" field.

The strange part is that I also updated my iPhone 5 and everything works fine, including gmail! I check the setting between the two devices and they are the same.

Apparently, many have reported these types of issues over the past few days. However, I've yet to see a solution. Apple hasn't seemed to have responded at all.

Have you tried power cycling the iPad then go back to settings>mail,contacts, and calendars and re add you gmail account?

I did but no luck. All else on the iPad appears to work fine.

Also you can try and add the email account as an exchange account have seen this resolve the issue as well. First go to settings>mail,contacts, and calendars. Select add account rather than hit Gmail select microsoft exchange, type in your full email address example@gmail.com and your password. on the next page for the server put in m.google.com and again your username and password for gmail must be your full gmail address. Let me know if that works.

Just tried adding via the Exchange method...let's me put in the email address, password, and description, but the "Next" button won't activate for me to continue. The only option is "Cancel". The "Next" button stays greyed out.

Also tried the "Other" option to setup an account. Get the same error as the Gmail approach.

As of 1/31/13 this no longer works, Google pulled the plug on this unless you set up your device prior to that date.

This may be a password issue you need to resolve with Google:

Also, you can try the GMail app rather than the native iOS Mail app, but you won't have your Google calendar.

Izzy as mentioned above looks like Google pulled the plug on the exchange account option, you could always try to add it under other by putting in the server settings manually to see if that works.

Yeah, I have an ad supported app that appears to work, but there is no reason that Apple should not be addressing this. I don't believe its a Google issue because it works fine on my iPhone with the 6.1.3 update.

Hi Timothy, I tried the "other" option and no luck.

It does seem to be a wide-spared issue when I googled it there are a lot of people complaining about this. Strangly, most of them seemed to have reported the issue on the iPhones...my iPhone is fine, its my iPad that is having the issue.

For what it's worth I am having no GMail problems with iOS 6.1.3 on either my iPad 4 or iPhone 5.

Given the content of iOS 6.1.3 I don't see how it could be causing your problem other than coincidentally.

Not sure what the issue is...like I said, my iPhone works fine with the 6.1.3 upgrade, the iPad doesn't...only after the updgrade. Additionally, other's have reported the same issue with gmail.

Yes, but the difference seems to be that you didn't delete your account on your iPhone, only iPad. In the past Google has had server issues with authentication, so on your iPad re-adding the account might be a problem at the moment. Either wait it out, or use the official GMail app for iOS (no ads).

FWIW, none of our GMail accounts in the household were affected by the 6.1.3 update across multiple iPhones and iPads.

I didn't delete the gmail accont until after having the issue. Immediately upon updating to iOS 6.1.3, my mail client would not open. I have email accounts for Yahoo, Gmail, and Exchange setup. The client would pop up for a split second and then just shut down. I tried doing a restart on the iPad but still same issue. My only option was to delete the gmail account out and then it let the mail client run.

Izzy,

I as well use gmail and works with no issues. If its working with the Gmail which also uses the Same IMAP settings as the Apple Mail app would could be a problem with the Mail App by Apple. Try a backup of your device and restore as new and see if it will work as if a new iPad.

I may just have to take that route. I may just wait a week or so just incase there is some type of response from Apple if this is a very large issue affecting many. Luckily, the gmail app that I'm suing works for the time being.
