My iPhone 3G shows a red battery logo but doesn't show charging

when I connect to AC at home or at the carrier's store. So the battery logo never moves from red. Yet it seems still to be charging (I connect it to AC overnight) and I've been using the phone on '15%' for four days now. The local genius bar could suggest only buying a new phone or restoring the current one but is there something less drastic?

iPhone 3G, iOS 4.1

Well, basic troubleshooting is always the first step. That would be reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).

If you don't want to restore, there's nothing more we can suggest.
