Apple has not tested all manufacturers SSDs. So they do not endorse using TRIM on non-Apple SSDs, and thier software does not send TRIM commands to non-Apple SSDs.

TRIM Enabler from groths is a very small freeware program that you can download and run and "flip the switch" to turn on TRIM. After a Restart it will be active. I have used it and had good results. Your mileage may Vary.

Is it harsh on the ssd and cut down on its life?

No. The reverse. An SSD without TRIM does not know what blocks are considered "deleted data" and continues to carry deleted data blocks around and re-organize them -- not knowing that they will NEVER be needed again -- but they are still thought to be good.

TRIM tells the SSD that Mac OS X considers these blocks to be "deleted data", and they need not be kept any more. The SSD has more room to work and lasts longer and does not get clogged up with "deleted data".

guys, i'm sorry for spamming, but i'm looking for a solution of a trim support problem myself...

i've changed my hdd for an ssd few days ago...and it's an apple ssd sm128 but i can't enable trim support...

i'm using osx 10.8.3, and i've tried all solutions i could find...

i've tested trim enabler (it starts the patch, but it says that the trim isn't enabled even after 10+ reboots) and all the rest of the stuff i could find on both this forum and many more pages...most of the things r about 3rd party ssd's and mine, even though it was not builted in by apple is an ssd from their own house...

anyway...nothing is working and i'm begining to stress out about this thing...

help...anyone??? 😟 pls!!

Did this supposed Apple SSD come with your system when it was bought new from Apple?

Otherwise how do you know it is an Apple SSD?

To my knowledge Apple does not sell any SSDs to the general public nor do any Apple stores sell upgrades from standard HDDs to SSDs after the system is purchased. So this Supposed Apple SSD you have is out of a Mac computer and more then likely older and may not support TRIM.

If you bought your Mac New from Apple and it Included this SSD then take the system into Apple and have them fix it.

I think u're wrong...i'm not 100% sure, but i know that 3rd party ssd's don't hv the possibility to get trim support enabled unless u do it with that terminal patch...so i guess that there is something in the os itself that makes an issue with ssd's that r not builted in by apple...why? well...i guess that they wanted to make us do it official..

anyway...thanks for brainstoring guys...if anyone has any idea...fell free 2 shoot 🙂

Just my 2 cents.

I have two M4 Crucial SSD's. One in a 2009 MBP and one in a late 2012 MBP, and have NOT enabled TRIM on either one for well over a year on the 2009 and 8 months on the 2012 and here's why.

http://lifehacker.com/5803331/how-to-enable-trim-on-your-macs-solid+state-drive

Since the M4 has built in garbage collection, enabling OSX TRIM may actually conflict with the built in garbage collection and may effect your SSD's performance.

BTW, both SSD's preform like they were new.

Therefore if you have a SSD with built in garbage collection it's not recommended to enable TRIM.
