Q: How to keep email unread when selected?

Hello, in Mail application, when I select an email, it automatically turns to read, even if I don't open it.

Very disturbing as you need to reset mails to unread all the time.

Is there a way to change that?

Thanks

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Are you asking about Mac Mail, Mail.app, in OS X Lion or Mountain Lion, for a Mac Computer, or iOS Mail.app for iPhones and or iPads??????

    You are confusing people here.

Thanks RC-R. I can see that Apple is loking for workarounds...

I am using the Mail.app in iOS.

Yes, this does work. Not as great as what I'm looking for, but kind of OK.

There are other Email programs that work quite well on a Mac computer running OS X.

I pointed to one, Thunderbird, and there are others.

Outlook, IMHO, is a disaster on any platform and I never said anything about Outlook.

I doubt anybody thinks you are stupid, maybe just a little confused about which OS runs which Apple device. If so, you are not alone.

Maybe this will help with that:

iOS is the operating system ("OS" for short) that runs iPhones, iPads, & similar 'i devices.'

OS X is the OS that runs Macs, like for instance a MacBook Air.

The versions of OS X have both names (like "Mountain Lion" or "Snow Leopard") & numeric designators (like OS 10.8.2 for the last version of Mountain Lion or 10.8.3 for the most recent one).

So if you are talking about the Mail.app running on a MacBook Air, it can't be running any version of iOS. Conversely, if you are talking about a mail application running on an iPhone or iPad, it can't be running any version of OS X.

    Make sense?

I never said or inferred you were stupid and nor do a I think that. Look for another email program. Open a web browser and go to Google.com and type in Email programs for Mac OS X and try some of the one that come up from that search.

The Mail Act-On plugin by Indev offers the feature you're looking for:

Totally agree with fmontrelay above. I would love to be able to scroll through my email without having to mark them as read even if my Preview pane active. Seems like a very basic feature that should be available.  Frustrating to me as well. Hopefully, Apple will have a solution soon.  Thanks, All.

As of 9/13, this is a FREE solution and from my quick test, seems to work great. (Thanks to developer Jim Riggs and to Charnita France for blogging about it.)

I can see that Apple is not interested in improving its Mail software. This is mind boggling to me as mail is probably the most used application on a computer.

I have left iMail for some time now and moved to airmail. Much better.

Mail Act-On is an Apple Mail add-on from InDev software ($24.95) that provides the ability to override this annoying behavior. It allows you to specify that messages be marked as read only when you open them or only after you view them in the preview pane for a specified amount of time. It also provides a lot of other automation capabilities and improved rules.

I bought this for Snow Leopard mainly for this feature.

You can use either Indev.ca's Act-On or Christianserving's Truepreview to fix this bug in OSX Mail. (Bug: messages are marked as read even if you just look at them cockeyed, making the feature useless.)

Apple knows about this bug and doesn't care about it one bit, because I've been requesting a fix through the Feedback page since about 2006. It's broken, and they will militantly keep it broken, no matter who needs it fixed.

Shame that this has to be the case... Mail integrates with OSX better than any other e-mail client, understandably. This is a very minor feature request in one of the most important apps on the OS. The above reports that the email has to be clicked on to be marked as read are also inaccurate... I have a new MBP with Mavericks (although I experienced the same behaviour on Lion and ML on a 2010 Mac Pro); upon deleting message(s), the next, automatically selected message is always marked as read. I see no way of hiding the preview pane, so this feature is a complete PITA.

Please could a feature request be submitted to the Mail.app devs? Paying for a 3rd party add-on is not an acceptable option in this matter.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
