why won't garageband record the keyboard of kontakt player?

i am using garageband, an older version, and kontakt player, also an older version (because newer versions won't work with this OS--10.5.8--) and garageband will not "print" the software instrument track i try to record using a loaded drumkit in kontakt player and played with kontakt player keyboard. i can hear sounds. i can see levels jumping in kontakt player (2) and also in garageband, but nothing records, not even the tubular red colored signal in the actual bed of the track; as soon as i press stop, the tubular "printed track" pathway disappears, although it shows while "recording" (but it's really not recording). please help. this is frustrating.
