why does imac G5 eject leopard install disk

Why does imac G5 eject leopard install disk? I'm trying to help my father get online to read the newspaper using an iMac G5 1.8 GHz 17". I've installed a new hard drive and reinstalled software and rus software updates until I've reached 10.4.11 and the lovely "your software is up to date" message. When I put in the Leopard 10.5.1 Install DVD, it auto ejects within 15 seconds and never gets mounted and never shows on desktop. When I place the same DVD in my Intel MacBook Pro running 10.6.8, the disk mounts and the install window opens as usual. Any suggestions on what i'm missing here? thanks

Is the install DVD the gray one that came with a Mac or the generic one?

It sounds like it is the gray one which is specific to hardware of the Mac it was issued with.

New disk with dark background and Large black X, apple logo etc. Just like the old boxed version I threw out several years back thinking I'd never need it again :-(

Just to be clear: only the 10.5 install DVD is doing this? No others? CDs OK?

You are correct. initial reinstal of 10.3 with original...flawless. Upgrade to 10.4 from install DVD, flawless. wireless connection and subsequent software upgrade to 10.4.11 with latest java, etc, flawless...The only problem arose when I progressed to 10.5 install from "Install DVD" (not computer specific version!).

I've read in another thread about resetting central settings by removing peripherals and powercord and pressing power button for 10 seconds, reattaching peripherals and powering back up but haven't tried this yet (I believe to fix a potential problem with optical drive) and will do so when I get back home afterwork. Or will this be a waste of time?

Glad to listen! Did you give the troublesome DVD a close look to see it there is any physical damage to the "business" side?

No problems on disk (scratches, dirt, gouges etc). Does resetting the central settings work on a PPC as it does on an intel, by powering down, disconnect everything and press power button for 10 sec, reconnect power and peripherals and restart?

close but no cigar, reset, sheeeza no work. since i can open the install disk on my powerbook, i'll try remote install next, but let me know if this is a stupid idea, thanks, mike

If you doing the internet, you can get by with Tiger. Get TenFourFox.
