I am having a hard time creating a custom format for my spreadsheet graph that changes my Y axis labels from 1,500,000 to 1.5M - I found a previous discussion on the subject but it doesn't actually explain how to format. I appreciate your help.

You can use the custom formatter for the x axis by selecting the chart, then open the chart inspector.
Then select "Custom..." from the "Format" menu.
Now give the mew format a name and set up like this:
