After turning on iCloud with my new iPad mini, the majority of contacts disappeared from my iPhone. But when typing new text message the name will appear. Then when I check in my contacts they are not there! This was my first time to try use the iCloud.

I have tried turning it off and back on in the contacts section of iCloud, restarting my phone. Deleted the iCloud account then turn it on again but nothing is working. How do I get them back? Please help!

Did you tap "Merge" when you enabled the iCloud?

Did you check you contacts groups? (Tap the "Groups" button on the up left corner of Contacts app).

Yes I tapped merge. Yes looked in the group option. Here I had Facebook contacts and iCloud contact. Then when turned the iCloud off it showed iPhone contacts but my missing contacts are still missing!

Did you used any other way to sync contacts? (like Gmail)?

Did you ever backup in iTunes?

Did you ever sync Contacts through iTunes to desktop Contacts app (if you are on Mac) or Outlook(if youare on Windows)?

No haven't synced with anything else.

Backed up to iTunes a long time ago, so recent contacts wouldn't be there.

Have a MacBook and again have backed up here since we no longer need to plug in iPhone for software up dates! My reminder list was cleared but when I turned this option off in iCloud my old lists came back. However this didn't work for my phone contacts.

I know they're there somewhere as they appear in the text messages when I type their name in! Just can't figure out how to get them back into contact app!

These numbers are in Messages app cache memory. Looks like you have to do it manually. Tap any name you remember in messages app and create a new contact. Also check your desktop contacts app.

I think i can't help you more. Sorry. You said that the majority of contacts disappeared. That is weird for me and i can't think why this happened.

In the future use an app (like "My Contacts Backup" to manually backup your contacts or use a time machine to backup your Mac which is syncing with iCloud contacts.)

So after trying to get them back without plugging in to iTunes nothing work so restored from last back up. But unfortunately I hadn't back up probably since you no longer need to connect with computer to update software. So my contacts not on my computer didn't come back. However they still appear when starting a text message so they're there somewhere! I'll keep trying :)

    As i said:

"These numbers are in Messages app cache memory."

    Nowhere else.

You will only find the contacts you sent a message previously.
