Downloaded and installed security update 2013-001 for os10.6.8. This had Safari 5.1.8 bundled with it. The application works but the icon in the Dock and in the Application folder is not the usual Safari compass but an unattractive generic application icon. Doesn't really matter, just not pretty to look at in Dock. Delete and start using Firefox? Anyone else found this? Apple's subtle way of saying move on?

Drag the ugly icon out of the dock. It goes poof. Then drag the pretty icon from the Applications folder into the dock.
I'm afraid restarting didn't cure anything. I've "poofed" the offending icon from the Dock but the icon in the Applications folder is just the same ugly one. I know ....live with it...life's too short. Thanks for yopur prompt responses.
What does this icon look like?
I think its the icon that appears under "Places" representing Applications in the left column when you open the HD icon on the desktop. It consists of a blank page with the corners of another blank page just visible to the left and bottom underneath that page. On top of the page at an is a short ruler (at an angle) marked with divisions 0 to 10. On top of the ruler so that the whole appears as a capital 'A' is a short pencil (on the left hand side of the 'A') coloured yellow with a red eraser as its top end. On the righthand side is a slightly longer brush with a brown handle. I've managed to copy the icon image by going to 'get info' but cannot paste it into this response.

Hold down command shift 4 and your cursor will change to cross-hairs. Drag over the part of the screen you want to capture. A ScreenShot will appear on your DeskTop. Click on Reply to a message in this thread, then click on the camera icon. Choose the Screenshot and click on Insert File. You may have to try twice. Close the Insert Image box and try again.

Open the Applications Folder, click on Safari, and choose file "Get Info." Then take a screen shot of the Info window, and post it here.
I use to have a similar issue on my previous MBP. I used to fix the individual icon by opening my application folder in fan format on the dock, dragging the application to the desktop (the desktop alias would then have the correct app icon), then drag the alias desktop icon to the application folder and this would correct the application icon in the applications folder, and finally I would delete the alias that was now located in the applications folder alongside the actual application.

No that didn't work. The icon remained stubbonly the same no matter where I dragged it.
However I have managed (don't ask me how) to change the icon so it is now the Preview application icon. I was following the suggestions set out below having downloaded a safari icon (or something very similar to it). Double clicked on the icon and this opened in Preview but when I tried to copy and paste the paste option on the safari Get Info page that was greyedout. So I tried draging and dropping and there was a green plus sign over the offending "not safari" icon but when I dropped the Preview icon appeared in the top left hand corner not the downloaded icon.
Oh.. I was logged on as the Owner and had read and write permissions

I have the same problem with the generic icon for Safari 5.1.8 after the latest security update for OS 10.6.8.
The "Get Info" icon-copy-and-paste trick (after copying the compass icon from an older Safari version from my Time Machine HD) won't work because this version of Safari won't accept "Paste" (it's grayed out in edit menu). The Permissions are fine, BTW.
The other odd thing with this version of Safari is that several of the customizable items for the Toolbar (like "New Tab", "Home" and "Top Sites") are now uniform silver buttons. Clearly a glitch that needs to be fixed.
