Purchased tunes won' t play on iPod 5-gen, will play through iTunes

situation is a new 5th gen iPod synchronizes tunes from old-gen ipod, WinXP SP2, iTunes v6.
The songs play fine in iTunes, and will show in songlists on the new iPod, but when we click play and ask iPod to play purchased tunes, the iPod shows the title, but then skkips to next song. if there are several purchased songs in a row, the iPod skips merrily along until it hits a ripped tune, and plays it in iPod just fine.
Older generation iPod has similar symptoms, same PC, different Library.

I have Reset the iPod, USB port OK, Have restarted PC, new iPod software from the CD (purchased one week ago), have NOT restored iPod.

This iPod belongs to a PC repair client's 11-year old son. I do not have immediate access to the device.

(help, b,noir?)
Thanks,
Rick

i am also having the same problem. i imported some songs from a cd and the ipod will play those, but it wont play songs purchased from itunes. also, my videos wont play either. if i do it in tv off mode the screen goes black; if i do it in tv on mode it just shows a still picture but the video still wont play. i just got my ipod yesterday so kinda im new to this, but i didnt think it would be this hard.

nope, mine won't work either. It started randomly after I bought a new album from iTunes. Hey, does anyone have limewire? I thought that might be the potential culprit, as it caused some rather sticky virus problems with my OS recently.

One addition: i have restored my iPod, but to no avail. It didn't help, and afterwards was not even recognized by iTunes. I restored it again, thinking it had worked, but once again, no. I actually got it connected back and reloaded my collection of just under 2,000, but only one song appeared on my iPod. Now i get that stupid sad face whenever it turns on, if it even turns on to begin with.

I think this has to do with Deauthorizing computer.
iTunes>Advanced>Deauthorize...enter AppleID.

To reauthorize...simply play in ITUNES...a purchased song, entering AppleID again.
Then reconnect your iPod, let things sync, see if purchased music is OK again on Pod.

I have seen several other threads on this subject, and they all seem to deal with Deauth/Reathorize.

I have not been able to physically perform this on the ProblemPod that i referred to in my question...but i emailed the steps to the boy's mother. Hopefully she can work through the 5 easy steps. These steps do not remove songs from the library nor the pod.

if you havent found a solution already i think i have an answer. i was having the same problem and i called apple support. they told me that i had to restore my pod. its relatively simple, but you have to back up your files because it erases everything and restores it back to the factory settings. i use windows so i dont know how it works for mac. u have to open the updater app. and pick the most recent one. connect your ipod and click restore when it appears. when it finishes, cloese the updater and check your pod. if there is a progress bar you have to leave it connected until it is done. if you had it in disk mode, you have to reset it. after it is done, the setup assistant shows and you have to name your pod and sync it all over again like you did when you first got it. at this point, it should be updated with your playlists and library. it worked for the songs, but my vids still wont play. dont have an answer for that one yet.

So why do you imagine that both a 3G and a brand-freakin' new 5G would both suddenly lose the ability to play purchased tunes, at precisely the same time?
The lady has been to Apple Genius bar twice, and ogtten two answers, one of which included reformatting the hardDrive on the PC, and reinstalling WinXP. (?!)

I uninstalled norton internet security, and installed a different antiVirus. virtually no other changes on PC.
The mother is not a big fan of iPod lately, and one of the sons seem to be a bit too young to care for the device responsibly... BUT, this "pass over purchased songs on the iPod" seems to be strangely linked to the introduction of the new 5G device. Thanks. We'll keep working on it.

OK, beet- you had the answer.

Here's what I did with XP/iPod/iTunes.
Created new user. (remember, he's 11, and doesn't have much stuff on the PC).
Backed up the contents of iTunesMusic Folder.
As the New User,
Deauthorized computer.
Reinstalled iTunes. Moved contents I backed up, back into newly created iTunesMusicFolder. Added that folder to iTunes Library.
Ran iPod updater, and RESET iPod.
Went through the 're-register' steps.
Sync'd iPod with iTunes.
Played purchased song on iTunes.
Ejected iPod.
Played purchased song.
Success.

Interesting observation. There is no longer a shortcut(?) alias(?) under the Library link that says "purchased".

Putzy, but it worked. The kid didn't have videos, so I couldn't ork on that issue.

Any updates from people on this thread? I have encountered the exact same problem with my 5G 60GB ipod. Songs purchased from iTMS play fine in itunes, but won't play on the ipod (they just get skipped over, the songs are transferred).

Things I've tried thus far:

reset ipod
Deauth/authorize computer
rebuilt itunes library
uninstalled/reinstalled itunes
used ipodupdater's "restore"

None of which have fixed the issue.

Really annoying, this problem just popped up today, I was playing purchased tunes on the ipod yesterday! Haven't installed anything new on the pc so I am pretty stumped.

Priznat-
Beet had the answer, and nothing worked until I created a new Windows user. See my note to beet above, or read it again, here:

I saw that, and I reeeeeeally don't want to create another user. That solution makes me think that for whatever reason even when you uninstall itunes it will keep the settings for it around, so when you reinstall on the same user account you'll still have the same issues.

Perhaps a better way would to be completely purge the itunes settings from the one user account.

I'll create a temporary new user just to see if it works, and if it does I'll hunt down all the itunes settings it leaves in windows on my first user and remove them all and try that..

Here's what I didn't try with the two young lads who were having trouble:
I didn't blow away settings on the original login for the kid or copy that iTunes library back into Junior's Music folder.

That could make the difference and turn your "New USer" into an intermediary step, finishing up having things work for your original user.

Beet gave the answer, I followed the steps, and it worked!
These kids had nothing major in their User Profile on XP, so it was no big deal to leave them as new users.
Good Luck
