Apps fail to install after restore

I had to get a replacement iPad Mini when the glass cracked on my original. Before I sent the original back, I backed it up as instructed.

But now when I do a restore fro backup, probably half my apps are hung up and have not re-installed. Entire folders are grayed-out because none of the apps in them have re-installed.

Same with my Music (I have very little music on the Mini because of space limitations, but my audiobooks are "there," but not there. Listed, but just a musical note instead of the covers, and not playable).

Photos do seem to all be there.

What's the best way to get my apps back?

If you are restoring form an iCloud backup, what I would do is consider erasing the device and start all over again. Your backup will still be available and trying to solve the waiting or stalled apps download might be a bigger problem that starting all over again.

Having said that, and assuming that you are restoring from an icloud backup, have you tried rebooting the iPad just to see if that springs the download back into action?

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

***EDIT: Sorry Demo, I swear your post wasn't there when I wrote this***

I'd first ensure you are connected to WiFi with good signal strength as this is an intensive amount of data you will be downloading.

If that is true, i'd then reccomend rebooting the iPad (Holding the power button until you get the red slider and powering off the device), wait 30 seconds and then power it back up. It should resume the restore.

If it still fails after all that, then I'd reset the iPad to factory state and try again

I am NOT restoring from iCloud but with cable from iTunes. I did just try the re-boot (often a cure-all for many issues), and it did not help.

I guess I will reset to factory state and start again. Wish it didn't take so long (largely thanks to my 12K photos).

One odd thing that happened in the middle of the attempted restore: iTunes asked me if I wanted to install the newest iOS. I said yes, assuming that's what I was supposed to do. In the midst of that process, iTunes said: Are you sure you want to install this new iOS in the middle of a synch? So then I thought I wasn't supposed to and stopped the install. I finished synching (except not really as explained) and did the new iOS install later.

Well I think that might answer some questions. Installing the update and then stopping the syn probably corrupted the sync.

Your apps are NOT included in the iTunes backup. Apps are stored in the iTunes library and you have to sync the apps back to the device. Did you try just syncing again to see of the apps are restored?

You can transfer the purchases into iTunes before you restor the iPad. While the iPad is connected to iTunes, right click on the iPad name on the left side under the devices heading and select - Transfer Purchases.

As long as you purchased all of your apps with the same Apple ID, it doesn't matter if you have different apps on 4 different iPads, you can always download the apps again without paying again.

OK. I hope the sync works!
