Q: HELP! My Library keeps resetting itself

Hello all

Since yesterday my iTunes library has reset itself, twice! I am on a HP Pavilion DV7 running Windows 8 with iTunes 11.0.2. It has been a while since I updated the software and have done absolutely nothing to my music folders or iTunes. It was working fine then when I fired it up yesterday morning everything was gone. I have tried reloading the library but the only library file is the blank library.

All my music is still on my computer it's just not in complied into a library anymore. And for some reson the only playlists i have in my iTunes folder are ones from several months ago that have since been deleted, updated, renamed (within iTunes itself), etc. I have 5000+ songs and I really don't want to try to repopulate my library again until I can get this problem solved. Here is a list of the files that are currently in my iTunes folder.

  • iTunes Library (1) - 9/1/2011 - iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Extras (1) - 8/17/2010 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Extras - 9/3/2011 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Genius (1) - 8/17/2010 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library Genius - 9/3/2011 -  iTunes Database File
  • iTunes Library - 3/26/2013 -  iTunes Database File (This is the current library file that is blank)
  • iT 1.tmp - 7/24/2011
  • iT 2.tmp - 3/24/2013
  • iT 3.tmp - 3/26/2013
  • iT.tmp - 7/23/2011
  • Temp File.tmp - 2/20/2013
  • iTunes Music Library - 3/26/2013 - XML Document

Out of all those files what can i delete? I feel like half of those aren't needed.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Thank you for any help you can provide

I have had the same problem as everyone else. I use AVG Free and Microsoft Security Essentials and have not had this problem before. The only problems I have had in the past was 2 earlier versions of itunes KILLED 2 80GB iPods which could not be fixed. I started having my current problem AFTER AVG Free had its last big update. Now it doesn't matter what iTunes version I use I have the same problem, I loose my library, apps, purchases as well as iTunes deleting the iTunes Extras and iTunes Genius files EVERYTIME I open iTunes add to that now I have to enter my password everytime iTunes opens. I have an HP Pavillion Dv7 laptop that runs Windows 7. I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested and NOTHING has worked. I every thought I might have had a bad bug and was considering wiping out my laptop and restoring it (glad I didn't do that...restoring all my programs takes forever).

iTunes v.10.7 also reset to default, in less than 24 hours.

I'm going back to v.10.6, but now I'm saying, get busy AVG.

I got an email which purported to be from AVG, asking for my phone number so they could call me for a little chat, and offered a prize for doing so. Is it likely to be legit? It feels sketch, so I haven't replied. I know so little on the tech side, it hardly seems useful anyway.

Don't do it! Call AVG at their number if you want to talk with them, but I wouldn't trust anyone who asked for my number.

Thanks. It wasn't quite as sketchy as all that, but the email seems to be deleted anyway!

Agreed, it seems a bit odd to start with a phone call rather than a dialog via email. I've just signed up to the one topic about this I can find on the AVG forum in case anything transpires there...

I am very glad I found this thread and read through all of it. I also have AVG, and to be perfectly honest I have no qualms over uninstalling. It has served me well the last few years, but currently their 2013 update has done nothing but act strangely and it has become very annoying. I will give MSE a try and rebuild my iTunes library...again. If the library resets itself after switching AV software I'm calling it quits with iTunes. I'll give it about a month since this problem seems to have been more spaced out for me than a lot of other people in this thread.

    Once again, thanks all

Hello all jsut a quick update. I excluded the iTunes fodler from my AVG program and because my iTunes folder was so out of sorts I decided to go delete all files and just start fresh with iTunes. Everything has been going well however I started up my computer and it had once again be reset. I'm gonna remove AVG and go back to Avast. Hopefully that will do it.

Just a quick update from me: I uninstalled AVG and have had no problems whatsoever with iTunes since.

Before doing so I did some basic empirical research:

With AVG free enabled I opened iTunes around 15-20 times, every 2-3 times it reset everything. I then temporarily disabled AVG for 10 minutes and opened and closed iTunes around 30-40 times without a single problem. I then re-enabled AVG, opened iTunes twice and on the second attempt it reset. Proof enough for me that AVG is the major failure in all this.

It's a shame, but there you go. Now running MSE and no problems at all to report.

Good work, - and thanks for all your help earlier on in the thread. Can you keep us up to date if anything useful comes up on the AVG threads?

Update: I uninstalled AVG Free (kept Microsoft Security Essentials), uninstalled iTunes, removed all iTunes/Apple entries, shutdown my laptop, restarted, installed the latest iTunes, reassembled my library, playlists and so forth. So far, no problems. I'll check things out tomorrow to see what happens. The last time I tried this it didn't work. This time I removed ANYTHING connected with Apple/iTunes and started fresh.

Removed AVG as well and switched to MSE. So far, no problems to report as well. However, MSE seems a bit too lite for my liking. What do you guys think?

I have had the exact same problems as stated in this thread and am also using AVG, but I do not want to get rid of AVG as I have used it for a very long time and it hasnt let me down.

I have tried renaming the latest temp file and this does work, however it only works for a small period of time and then I get the same problem again.

I just hope there is going to be an update that fixes this problem as it is very annoying.

Hey guys, yeah I'm having the same issues as everyone here. Its such a shame to have to remove AVG, and you would of thought that Apple would be pretty quick to get out a patch to sort this. Maybe they are, but seems like this has been going on for a little while.

    On another note

AVG - The one AV that seems to be causing serious problems

Microsoft Security Essentials - Anyone had any issues?

Avast 2013 - Anyone encountered anything?

Avira Free Antivirus 13 - Same as above any feedback?

    Comodo Internet Security?
