Water damaged iphone

Hi

I have an iPhone 5. I accidentally brought it into the pool and hot tub while i was on vacation and it wasn't turning on. I tried plugging it into the wall and it kept blinking the apple symbol. then when I tried plugging it in again, it didn't even blink. Today, I plugged it into my computer and it gives me the blinking apple and it tells me that it is in recovery mode. Then, I tried unplugging and plugging it again and it didn't pop up in iTunes. It is still blinking. How do i make it recognize the iphone again and restore it?

What do I do?

You've cooked it. Make an appointment at the genius bar. An out of warranty replacement will cost you $229 if you didn't buy AppleCare+. The chances of tha phone ever working again are extremely slim.

If you would have immediately put it into a bag of uncooked rice or silica gel and left it there for a week or so, there might have been a chance.. plugging it into a power source and attempting to turn it on without drying it out pretty much ensures that it is now well and truly toast.

Also, unplug it. do NOT attempt to charge it or power it up. It's now a fire/safety hazard. Put it someplace safe until you can get to the Apple Store.

Let the record show that KiltedTim is not correct in his statements. I had the exact same problem and fixed it myself without paying any money. iPhone 5

1. Washed my phone with my clothes

2. Phone turned off by itself in the washer

3. Put phone on rice for a day and a half

4. Plugged phone in to wall and got one flash of apple logo, then nothing

5. Put iPhone back on rice for 2 more days

6. Plugged phone in to wall and got constant flashing apple logo, even after unplugging and plugging back in

7. Unplugged iPhone, connected cord to computer with itunes open. Held home button down while plugging cord into phone to put phone into restore mode.

8. Phone restored and is working now. Can make calls etc no problem all buttons work. Screen is slightly damaged.

Only problem is the battery doesnt seem to want to charge. Will update on that.

If there is liquid damage the iPhone will probably need replacement. You can try to restore by connecting to your computer then holding the home and power button down until you see the silver apple. Once that comes up just let go of the power button but keep holding the home button you should get the itunes logo and usb cable showing that it is in recovery mode. attempt to restore then.

As kiltedtim mentioned, if its not showing up and not powering on the liquid damage has more than likely damaged the phone beyond attempting to restore, espically if it cant power up on its own any more. You can call apple care or go to an apple store to have the iPhone replaced at a charge if you dont have AppleCare+ or check with your carrier if you have their insurance.

What part of "this phone is a fire/safety hazard" is unclear?

You can not fix it. You attempted to charge it / turn it on while there was water inside the phone. Water and electricity are not friends. If you keep trying to get a water damaged phone to work, you are likely to find yourself with a face full of battery acid.

Do NOT attempt to use it. Just pony up the $229 for an out of warranty replacement from Apple.
