Software updates install but wont update after restart macbook.

I have a macbook running 10.6.8. when I go to software updates a bunch of things pop up on the list. it says to install all items and when i click that a pop up says i have to restart. everytime i restart it goes to that grey/blusish screen then comes right back up and nothing happens. i would have appreciate if i can get some help. im new to macs. i did download a 10.6.8 combo updater and there was no difference.
