Hindsight 20-20, wished I did the full backup before 10.8.3. Machine was running great on 10.8.2

Interesting note, letting the machine sit for awhile it recovered from the freeze. Safari seemed to 'disappear'.

Downloading the combo, but have my doubts. 10.8.2. Combo would be better but the fallback wouldn't be that pretty.

If 10.8.3 Combo doesn't help then I would not think that 10.8.2 Combo would. There are other issues at play here. You don't have any Security/Anti-virus Software? No MacKeeper, LittleSnith etc.? You have repaired your permissions and disk from Command+R bootup using DiskUtility? Just for starters.

Yes, did the Command-R yesterday, disk utility, repairs, which I thought fixed it until I was prompted for my P/W on this site.

Being an old (old) windows guy, I do have Symantec installed. I'm a hold out from the Peter Norton days. I do need to change that and go to another product.

Norton is perhaps the most destructive program you can install on a Mac IMO. Uninstall it immediately and see if things improve drastically. You do not need Anti-Virus/Security software. It is already built in. You can use ClamXAV if you really feel the need. But just try uninstalling Nortons first. I am betting that will make a severe improvement to your system.

Hi Gaj

You really ought to post your own question. Bassel Kilo has not returned with more information in which a number of factors may have caused the problem. Without additional information no one is any closer to solving his complaint.

Among the reasons for posting a new question is that do not have the same hardware. As you wrote you "have a top of the line retina mac book pro" and the OP has a Mac Pro (as does Mr. Wills). We have no idea which of its eight models it may be, but none of them use the same graphics card as the Retina MBP.

Both you and he upgraded or updated from some as yet unknown version of OS X, no one knows which, but a Retina MBP may originally have had Lion or Mountain Lion installed. There are differences among those models as well.

As you can see the same complaint can arise from a number of different causes.

I think it is more helpful for the community to see that a set of users are all experiencing the same problem after updating to 10.8.3.

The symptoms may be the same, but if the hardware is different, the problems may not even be related, and no single solution can be proposed.

That is one reason the Terms of Use offers the following guidance:

Post constructive comments and questions. Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer.

I suggest that requesting more information is also appropriate when attempting to solve a problem. Pete asked, you didn't answer, and an argument is the predictable result. Were you two married at one time?

There are many examples of threads in which people tack on "me too" responses, but they do not conform to the above guidelines. I realize most people do not take the time to understand how this user support forum is supposed to work, but please understand that it helps no one to simply post "me too" when the combination of hardware and software and what people do with them together tends to produce unique problems. Joining the thread is a great idea if you can add to the information at hand, but doing so to simply draw attention to an issue will only hinder progress toward a solution.

I hope you reconsider your reticence to start a new thread, as well as others who posted "me too" replies. Doing that will accomplish exactly nothing.

Small steps. The combo is a pretty big leap. But like I said, plans are to remove it.

Where is the Anti Virus built in? I understand the code is pretty tight but I've also read there have been some attacks. I sort of like having something run on it. Gives you that warm feeling,,,,,like petting in your pants :-)

Malware has snuck in through Java. I keep it turned off. Combo is a simple install, but I don't think anything will be effective untill you dump Nortons. A quick search of these forums will show the dangers associated with Symantec products and the Mac OSX. Try uninstalling it. Even Sophos AV is much less destructive.

Yes you do.

Get rid of Norton / Symantec, and do not install another product. You don't need anything other than a properly maintained OS X.

Forget what you learned from Windows. Third party anti-virus utilities have no place on a Mac, can do nothing beneficial for it, may be the cause of your problems, and will only complicate troubleshooting if it's not.

Thanks John,

Based on your sensibly put position, I will happily start a separate thread for my problem.

I will also note that I am usually constructive, and saw my contribution to this thread as constructive. And I am open to input from you that it is misplaced.

It was Pete who opened with an unprovoked personal attack and an arrogant demand that I start a new thread.
