I made a mistake and bought MacBook Pro Ret 15" on Amazon.jp. Yeah, Japanese keyboard. :(. Wont allow return. How difficult would it be to use it with a Japanese keyboard? :(

I know that there are problems with the @ sign and puctuations. What else will I be facing? Really bummed. Amazon guarentee was rejected. They reply 'that i knew what I was buying'. I just opened the box. Hasnt been turned on. So frustrated. But considering just going with it and using it as is. Living in Japan for only 3 more months.

The only thing unique about that keyboard is the symbols painted on the keys.

All other stuff can be modified in

System preferences > Languages and Text > ...

• Language: { English, Japanese, etc. } Note: British, Australian, Canadan, and US are all English for this pane

• Text: adjusts nuances of sorting, spelling, auto-Quoting

• Formats: adjusts Currency Symbols and Date ordering

• Input Sources: Makes the actual Keyboard Mapping changes Note: British, Aus, CAN, and three flavors of US English are all unique English variants

Well, it's too late since you accepted the box. If you knew of this issue ahead of time, you could have dodged the delivery guy. No signature for a couple of days and it would have gone back.

Does it say anywhere on the page you ordered it from that it will have the Jap keyboard on it? If not, then you have a leg to stand on. Honestly, you probably should have just told them it wasn't turning on. Probably too late for that now since they probably already took info down on the first call you did into the system. Chalk it up to a learned experience. Honestly, you thought you were ordering a laptop you can use as an English speaking individual. How the heck are you supposed to know it didn't have an English keyboard on it? Was it blatantly obvious on the site? Was the site all in JP? I don't think so... that should have been obvious to you. If it was, then ya... you don't have a leg to stand on.

Actually, you have a leg to stand on. If it doesn't say JP keyboard, that's your way out. It's not your fault they didn't disclose that info. It must be disclosed if the hardware had any region specific info on it. After all, you wouldn't go into a store and buy one with a keyboard you couldn't see. If there's no pictures or text indicating that you'll be getting a region specific model with a keyboard that you cannot read, then you need to call Amazon back and escalate the issue to a manager. Calmly explain to them the issue. Play dumb. Tell them you ordered from that site because that's what you were redirected to because you're in JP right now. You're an American working there and have your stuff set to translate sites to English because you cannot read JP, shouldn't be an issue with someone to see the logic in this. And because you didn't see any red flags that stood out, you thought you were buying a laptop that was going to be usable by you. How are you supposed to know that laptops can come with region specific keyboards? That wasn't indicated anywhere on the site for that product. And you certainly shouldn't be expected to know that since your current work and personal computers have English keyboard on them. It all boils down to how you present the issue to the manager. If I could make the call for you, I would and can guarantee you that if all these things hold true (the part about there not being indicators of what keyboard you'd be getting), then they would accept the return as a one time good will gesture for someone. That's what you need to go with.
