Do I need enough storage to completely back up my entire hard drive?

I need to have a complete back up of my hard drive, but I also need to stream my videos and photos so they take up all my hard drive space and slow my machine. I want this to happen directly between my iphone and macbook.

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), Mac OS X (10.7.5), iphone 4S OX6

Get another drive for your streaming and storage needs. Use another drive for your backup needs. Backup and storage should not be combined on the same drive if you value your data.
