Why is my iMAC running so slow?

My iMAC is suddenly running so slow. I have plenty of hard drive space left, there doesn't seem to be anything running upon start up, and I keep all of my software up to date. I'd appreciate any suggestions that might help speed it up b/c it's gotten extremely slow. Thank you!
