I inadvertently trashed safari for OS X 10.6.8; how do I download safari for my Imac OS X 10.6.8 ?

Safari is included as part of the operating system installation, so you need to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6.8 to get it back. Are you sure it is truly trashed? Have you checked in the Applications folder to see if it is still there and can be restarted and dragged to the dock?
Use Pacifist to extract it from your Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, run the 10.6.8 combo updater, and then Security Update 2013-001.

I wonder if (re) applying that would do it, or Ralph & Eric's Safari 5.1.7 link first, if the update fails to replace a missing Safari.

Wrong - it's just a partial update, and would require an existing copy of the app
