Sounds like you may have a corrupt iPhoto Library.

Note - Apple does recommend you create a back up of your iPhoto Library, as a precautionary measure, before troubleshooting the iPhoto Library.

- quit iPhoto and all other open applications

- hold down your "option + command" keys on the keyboard, and keep them held down while launching iPhoto. This should launch iPhoto with a "first aid" screen over top of it. Do each of these first aid steps, one at a time, until you have completed all the steps.

Most Simple Back Up

Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.

Slightly more complex:

Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate

While for this purpose (a very short term temporary backup) a duplicate on the same disk will work - to protect your photos (and other files) from hardware, software and user failure you must have an external hard drive and your backup must be on it - making a copy on the same hard drive does not protect against hardware failures - it is pretty fair protection against user and software failures
