Looking at the storage breakdown within "about this mac" ive noticed that there is almost 160gb of my hd space used up by back ups? i dont understand why as i back up to a network hard drive using Time Machine, can any help me to find out what these are? can i see this info anywhere?

MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

"backups" are time machine local snapshots: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4878

welcome..you can also delete them and prevent them from occurring to free up space if you really need it: open terminal, copy and paste "sudo tmutil disablelocal" without the quotes and hit enter and you will see the storage free up immediately.
