If you do not have the iMac's original System Install DVD, contact Apple and try to obtain one from them. There is a modest fee ($25 or so).
You will need your iMac's serial number. It is printed somewhere on its case: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2452

Thanks John, I was thinking there is a way to download it, the main thing is I need to access some of the files from my hd. I think it will take some time for DVD to arrive... do you know a way to connect my macbook to imac to do that?
Sure, that's easy, but I need to know the model iMac and MacBook you have. There are dozens of each. You should be able to use FireWire Target Disk Mode and a suitable cable, or an adapter. Which one depends on which Mac models you are connecting.
Networking them is another possibility but networking OS X "Tiger" was always a bit tedious, and you would have to resolve the failure to boot first.
