Q: I have a modem (with comcast) and a wireless router.

The WAN cable is currently connected from the modem to the wireless router.  This way when in the AirPort Utility there are no configured base stations but it is connected to the internet.  I'm I going to need another ethernet cable to connect everything to the capsule?  or which one can I disconnect to be able to connect to the time capsule.  I tried disconnecting the WAN cable from the wireless router and plugging it directly from the modem to the capsule but then my AirPort Utility disconnects internet connection.  If I unplug the modem, well then, i'm assuiming i definitely will not have internet connection.  I'm technically challenged, any one out there willing to shed some light on me please???

Exactly what modem and router do you have now.

Yes, I would go to any big computer store and buy a couple of ethernet cables..

One to plug from the TC to the existing router and one to plug into computer from the TC.. if possible and perhaps just for setup. doing wireless setup from wireless is always a mess. do it from ethernet is much better.. and the backups will be much faster.

Ethernet cables are only a few dollars.

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to write back.  I borrowed an ethernet cable from a friend and plugged the time capsule directly to the wireless router (d-link which I hear is a piece of garbage).  Anyways, everything seems to be working now.  I was able to back-up the iMac to the time capsule.  Now I need to figure out what to do with all of these cables and the d-link (wireless router).  I should be able to disconnect the ethernet cable now from the old router and TC and also throw the d-link (old wireless router) away if I'm going to be using the TC as a wireless router.

side note: went out and bought a MacBook Pro w/retina display and nowwwww I'm having trouble recovering the data stored in the TC to the MacBook.  I'll be calling Apple later on tonight to see if they can help. Man oh Man!!!
