Q: why did my audio input stop working

Three weeks ago I pulgged in a small audio mixer with 2 RCA outs to a 4 pole 3.5 mm jack into my macbook pro dual audio in/out.  I was able to select it in preferences and test the audio in garage band.  Today, I plugged in the same system and my macbook would not see it.  I can't figure it out.  At one point it changed from internal microphone to external but then went back.  I no longer recognizes the external mic/input. Did apple change something in the last update?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

    I own a behringer zenyx 502 audio mixer. It has 2 rca outs (left and right)  I used an rca cable to 4 pole 3.5 mm plug (red, white, and yellow rca ends to 3.5 mm plug).  3-4 weeks ago I plugged it into my macbook pro (late 2012).  I had a senheiser m300 shotgun mic (powered) plugged into the behringer.  I went onto sys prefs>sound and "external microphone" showed up in my device options for audio input.  I recorded my voice in garage band and audacity to test it.  It worked great.  Then the other day I hooked up the same setup just before filming and the "external microphone" no longer shows up.   After trying different cables it showed up once (flashed really) then nothing.

    I'm not sure if apple changed something since 3-4 weeks ago or if I just got lucky that one time.  Can't figure it out. I appreciate the help.

    Is your laptop 13" or 15"?
