no camera in finder

When I plug my Canon Digital Rebel DS6041 into the iMac (using a USB port), the images show up on iPhoto, but I cannot see them in Finder. Since my iPhoto is refusing to import these files (erroring that the JPEG files are an unknown type), I am trying to download the files directly to Finder so I can work on them.

The camera does not show up as a device on the desktop (nor in the sidebar of a Finder Window) although I have the Finder>Preferences set to show all devices; but I CAN see it in the System Profiler>Hardware>USB.

How can I get my Canon onto the desktop?
