Click the small icon to the left of the site's address and drag it to the desktop.

When I do that a shortcut icon with a Safari image is placed on my desktop - not the web site icon.
After doing that, control-click the page, choose Show Page Source, search the text for ico, load the URL to the site's favicon.ico file, control-click the image, choose Copy Image, select the webloc file in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, and paste the icon.

This worked, thank you, but the icon images were so small in the favicon.ico files that they were resulted in blurry icons when expanded onto the desktop. I may just have to live with that.
