Why is my macbook locking up?

Let's start there. Your hard drive is choking. That is way too much stuff on it. Rule of thumb is to use less than about 80% of capacity. Your hard drive is more than 95% full.

So the first thing to do is make sure you have a back up of everything on the drive.

Second, start purging. Empty the trash, trash stuff you don't need, then empty the trash again, and so on. Keep purging till you have about 50 gB free.

Boot from the OS CD, and run Disk Utility. In DU run Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions.

When you boot from the OS CD pretend you want to install the OS, but you won't. The first screen asks for language choice. At the next screen you have access to Utilities in the menu bar. Select DU. When it is open, select your drive, and first Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions.

The critical issue is whether your Mac stops locking up after all this. If this were my computer I would also defragment the hard drive. After being that full there will be file fragments scattered everywhere. But you need a utility like Tech Tool Pro - it's not free - to do that.
