No sound coming out of headphones on left side {Mac} Mid 2011

Speakers work fine when having no headphones plugged in but when I plug them in I hear nothing but static on the left side. My right side of my headphones work perfect. I have tried multpile headphones but same results occur. I have tried balancing the sound but I still have the same results.
