I aquired a G4 MDD and loaded Tiger on a HD - installed it and it won't start up - keeps searching for an operating system.

It was used as a server - is there something on the mother board that won't let it be anything but a server?

iBooks G4+G4, iMac 24", several G4 PowerMacs, Intel MacMini, iPods, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

No. There was never a server specific configuration of the G4 with the mirrored drive doors.

That system should support (in theory) any OS from 10.2.x to 10.5.x.

I'd suggest erasing the drive and trying the install again.

It's possible you used a machine specific 10.4 installer DVD? How you managed to install it though is harder to fathom? You may have been able to boot from it but it would have failed as soon as you tried to install it.

The installer DVD you want for Tiger is black coloured type rather than the gray coloured one.

I think your phrase ". . . loaded Tiger on a HD . . ." might be a clue as to how you actually "installed" Tiger? If you copied an existing OS onto an external hard drive and copied it over again, it won't work.
